Mountain Trekking
6 Days Marangu Trek
Overview
The 6-day Marangu Route is the complete, classic version of Mount Kilimanjaro’s oldest path. Known as the "Coca-Cola" route, it is the only trail on the mountain that features comfortable, dormitory-style A-frame sleeping huts, solar-powered light, and communal dining halls rather than tents. Adding an extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut transforms this itinerary, boosting the summit success rate from roughly 30% on the 5-day option to over 70%. The route takes you through a rich spectrum of ecosystems—from dense, humid rainforests to towering moorland lobelias, across the barren alpine desert saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, and finally up to the arctic glaciers of Uhuru Peak.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Elevation: 1,860 m/6,102 ft to 2,720 m/8,923 ft
Distance: 8.3 km/5.2 mi
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Rain Forest
Meals: Lunch and Dinner
Description: After a drive from the hotel to Marangu Gate, you will meet your mountain guide and crew while completing the park registration formalities. The trek begins along a well-defined, shaded forest path winding through a dense, green rainforest canopy. The damp air is filled with mosses, giant ferns, and exotic flowers, while blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys move overhead. The climb today is gradual and steady, providing a gentle warmup for your legs. By late afternoon, you will arrive at Mandara Hut, set in a peaceful forest clearing. A short, scenic walk to nearby Maundi Crater is an option for expansive views across the forest into neighboring Kenya.
Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Elevation: 2,720 m/8,923 ft to 3,720 m/12,205 ft
Distance: 12.5 km/7.8 mi
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Habitat: Heath and Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Description: Leaving Mandara Hut early, the rainforest quickly gives way to open heather and alpine moorland. The trail becomes rockier and exposes you to wide-open skies and direct sunlight. As you gain altitude, you will encounter the iconic giant groundsels (Senecio) and towering lobelias that dot the landscape. On clear days, you get your first sweeping views of Kibo’s icy summit ahead and Mawenzi’s jagged peak to the side. You will stop for a packed lunch along the trail before pushing upward to Horombo Hut, a lively hub of A-frame cabins set on a wide ridge where you will spend the next two nights.
Horombo Hut to Zebra Rocks to Horombo Hut (Acclimatization Day)
Elevation: 3,720 m/12,205 ft to 4,020 m/13,188 ft to 3,720 m/12,205 ft
Distance: 5 km/3.1 mi
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Description: Today is the crucial acclimatization day that sets the 6-day trek apart. Following the classic "hike high, sleep low" rule, you will take a slow, gentle morning walk up toward Mawenzi Peak to reach the Zebra Rocks (4,020 m). Named for their striking black-and-white mineral stripes, these massive volcanic rock formations offer a fantastic backdrop for photos. This extra exercise stimulates red blood cell production without exhausting your body. You will return to Horombo Hut in time for a hot lunch and spend the afternoon resting, drinking water, and preparing for the high-altitude days ahead.
Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Elevation: 3,720 m/12,205 ft to 4,720 m/15,485 ft
Distance: 9.5 km/5.9 mi
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Description: Leaving Horombo Hut, you climb gradually into the stark, otherworldly alpine desert. The vegetation thins out completely as you cross the "Saddle"—the wide, wind-swept lunar landscape connecting Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. You will pass the "Last Water Point" before trekking across the dry gravel plain. The pace must be deliberate and slow to manage the increasingly thin air. You will reach the thick stone block walls of Kibo Hut by mid-afternoon. After a early hot dinner, you will organize your summit gear, double-check headlamps and thermal layers, and go to bed early around 7:00 PM.
Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
Elevation: 4,720 m/15,485 ft to 5,895 m/19,341 ft to 3,720 m/12,205 ft
Distance: 6 km/3.7 mi up, 15 km/9.3 mi down
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours up, 5-6 hours down
Habitat: Arctic / Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Description: Your guide will wake you around 11:30 PM for warm tea and snacks. You step into the freezing night to begin the ultimate summit push. The trail ascends steeply over loose scree and volcanic ash in long switchbacks, passing Hans Meyer Cave along the way. You will reach Gilman’s Point (5,681 m) on the crater rim right around dawn, greeted by the first golden rays of sunrise reflecting off the glaciers. Continuing along the crater edge for another hour, you reach Uhuru Peak (5,895 m)—the highest point in Africa. After photos at the famous wooden sign, you begin a fast, scree-sliding descent back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and hot meal. You then continue trekking down to Horombo Hut for a well-deserved, long night of sleep.
Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
Elevation: 3,720 m/12,205 ft to 1,860 m/6,102 ft
Distance: 20 km/12.5 mi
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Habitat: Rain Forest
Meals: Breakfast and Lunch
Description: After a hearty breakfast, you join your mountain guides and porters for the traditional tipping and song celebration at Horombo Hut. The final hike is a long downhill journey retracing your steps through the moorland and back into the lush rainforest canopy. The thicker air makes every step easier as you descend. You arrive at Marangu Gate by early afternoon, where you will sign out of the park and receive your official certificate of achievement (gold for Uhuru Peak, green for Gilman’s Point). Your vehicle will be waiting to take you back to your hotel for a long shower and celebration.
