Mountain Trekking
6 Days Machame Trek
Overview
The Machame Route, famously known as the "Whiskey" route, is the most popular and arguably the most scenic trail on Mount Kilimanjaro. Approaching the mountain from the south, it traverses incredible, diverse landscapes—from dense rainforests to the striking Shira Plateau, before circling the towering Kibo peak via the Southern Circuit. This 6-day itinerary is the challenging, fast-paced version of the route. It requires strong stamina because it combines two hiking days into one, skipping the overnight acclimatization stop at Karanga Camp and pushing straight to the Barafu base camp. Despite the tougher schedule, it remains a breathtaking adventure that features the famous "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization profile at Lava Tower and the thrilling scramble up the Barranco Wall.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Elevation: 1,800 m/5,905 ft to 2,835 m/9,301 ft
Distance: 11 km/6.8 mi
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Habitat: Rain Forest
Meals: Lunch and Dinner
Description: After the morning drive from hotel to Machame Gate, you will complete your park registration while the guides and porters weigh and pack the gear. The hike begins immediately in the dense, magnificent montane rainforest that blankets the lower southern slopes. The trail is often muddy and can be quite slippery under the thick canopy, winding through ancient trees draped in moss and giant ferns. You might hear or spot black-and-white colobus monkeys in the branches above. It is a long, steady climb that tests your legs right away. By late afternoon, the forest canopy begins to open up, and you arrive at Machame Camp, set right at the edge of the heather zone where you will spend your first night in tents.
Machame Camp to Shira 2 Camp
Elevation: 2,835 m/9,301 ft to 3,850 m/12,631 ft
Distance: 5 km/3.1 mi
Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Description: You wake up early, leaving the rainforest completely behind as you climb a steep, rocky ridge. The landscape quickly shifts into the moorland zone, dominated by short, scrubby heather and eerie, moss-draped trees. The route is shorter today but steep and consistently uphill. You cross a small valley and arrive at a high plateau with spectacular, sweeping views of the Western Breach and the jagged peaks of Shira. You will arrive at Shira 2 Camp by mid-afternoon. From this exposed campsite, you can look back over the clouds to see Mount Meru in the distance and watch a stunning sunset light up the icy face of Kibo peak.
Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Elevation: 3,850 m/12,631 ft to 4,600 m/15,091 ft to 3,900 m/12,795 ft
Distance: 10 km/6.2 mi
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Habitat: Semi-desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Description: Today is one of the most important days on the mountain for acclimatization, strictly following the "climb high, sleep low" principle. Leaving Shira, the trail turns east into a semi-desert and rocky landscape. You will trek upward for several hours to the base of the massive Lava Tower (4,600 m), affectionately called the "Shark's Tooth." You will stop here for a hot lunch, exposing your body to the high altitude. Afterward, you descend sharply into the Barranco Valley. This descent is incredibly scenic, passing dense forests of the bizarre giant groundsel plants (Senecio kilimanjari). You arrive at Barranco Camp, which sits in a deep valley directly below the towering, icy cliffs of the Breach Wall.
Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp
Elevation: 3,900 m/12,795 ft to 4,680 m/15,354 ft
Distance: 9 km/5.6 mi
Hiking Time: 8-10 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Description: Today is a long, grueling double-day that requires deep physical endurance. The morning starts immediately with the famous Barranco Wall—a massive, 250-meter rock face. It looks intimidating, but it is a fun, non-technical scramble that requires you to use your hands to navigate the "Kissing Rock." Reaching the top offers stunning views of the Heim Glacier. From there, you hike a series of steep ups and downs through the Karanga Valley, where the 7-day trekkers stop for the night. You will only stop here for a hot lunch before pushing forward. The trail connects with the Mweka route, turning into a barren, desolate, and steep alpine desert slog until you finally reach Barafu Camp (Swahili for "ice"). You will eat an early dinner, prepare your summit gear, and try to sleep by 7:00 PM.
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Elevation: 4,680 m/15,354 ft to 5,895 m/19,341 ft to 3,100 m/10,170 ft
Distance: 5 km/3.1 mi up, 12 km/7.5 mi down
Hiking Time: 7-8 hours up, 4-6 hours down
Habitat: Arctic / Rain Forest
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Description: Your guides will wake you around 11:30 PM with hot tea. Layered in extreme cold-weather gear, you step into the freezing night to begin the final summit push. The ascent is a slow, steep, and mentally taxing switchback climb over loose volcanic scree by headlamp. You will reach Stella Point (5,756 m) on the crater rim right at sunrise, an emotional moment offering the most magnificent dawn you will ever see. From there, it is about an hour-long push across the snow-capped rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating and taking photos, you begin a knee-jarring, steep descent back to Barafu Camp for a brief rest and lunch. You then pack up and continue the long descent down to Mweka Camp, located back in the upper rainforest, for your last night on the mountain.
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Elevation: 3,100 m/10,170 ft to 1,640 m/5,380 ft
Distance: 10 km/6.2 mi
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rain Forest
Meals: Breakfast
Description: Your final morning begins with a celebratory tipping ceremony, where you sing and dance with the guides and porters who helped you reach the roof of Africa. The hike down is a gentle, steady descent through the lush and beautiful rainforest. Because this trail is used only for descending, it is well-maintained but can be muddy and slippery on the knees, making trekking poles very useful. You will arrive at the Mweka Gate by late morning or early afternoon to sign out, say your final goodbyes to the crew, and receive your gold summit certificate before hopping in the vehicle for the drive back to Arusha for a highly anticipated hot shower and a cold beer.
