Overview

The 4-day Mount Meru trek is the most recommended way to experience Tanzania’s second-highest peak. While the route is identical to the 3-day option, adding an extra day entirely changes the experience. It breaks up the notoriously punishing 14-hour summit day, allowing you to descend only as far as Miriakamba Hut after reaching the peak, rather than pushing all the way to the park gate. This gentler pace not only saves your knees but gives you more time to enjoy the walking safari on the lower slopes, acclimatize properly, and soak in the views of the ash cone and nearby Mount Kilimanjaro without feeling completely exhausted.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

Elevation: 1,500 m/4,921 ft to 2,500 m/8,202 ft

Distance: 10 km/6.2 mi

Hiking Time: 4-5 hours

Habitat: Montane Forest

Meals: Lunch and Dinner

Description: After registering at the Momella Gate inside Arusha National Park, you will meet your armed park ranger who will escort you through the lower slopes. Because this is a 4-day trek, we take the longer, more scenic route up today. The trail winds through open grasslands dotted with grazing buffaloes, giraffes, and warthogs before entering a dense, atmospheric montane forest. Along the way, you will pass the spectacular Tululusia Waterfall and walk right through the famous "Fig Tree Arch"—a massive strangler fig large enough to drive a car through. After a steady, gradual climb, you will emerge at the grassy glade of Miriakamba Hut in the late afternoon, where you can watch the sunset over the Meru Crater.

Day 2

Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

Elevation: 2,500 m/8,202 ft to 3,500 m/11,483 ft

Distance: 8 km/5 mi

Hiking Time: 3-5 hours

Habitat: Moorland

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Description: Today’s hike is much shorter but steep. You will climb the wooden steps built into the trail, ascending through the lush forest and up to "Mgongo wa Tembo" (Elephant Ridge), which offers an incredible viewpoint overlooking the crater floor and the sheer cliffs of the inner wall. As you cross the 3,000-meter mark, the tall trees quickly give way to the giant heathers and scrubby bushes of the moorland zone. You will arrive at Saddle Hut in time for a hot lunch. In the afternoon, you will take a highly recommended acclimatization hike up to the peak of Little Meru (3,820 m / 12,533 ft). It takes about an hour up and offers brilliant views of the Kenyan border before you head back down for an early dinner and some sleep.

Day 3

Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak to Miriakamba Hut

Elevation: 3,500 m/11,483 ft to 4,562 m/14,967 ft to 2,500 m/8,202 ft

Distance: 5.5 km/3.4 mi up, 13.5 km/8.4 mi down

Hiking Time: 4-5 hours up, 5-7 hours down

Habitat: Alpine Desert / Montane Forest

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Description: The summit push begins at midnight. You will navigate the steep, sandy trail by headlamp, reaching Rhino Point (3,800 m) before the path drops briefly and begins the famous crater rim walk. This narrow, rocky ridge drops off steeply on both sides and requires a bit of scrambling over volcanic rock in the dark. You will reach Socialist Peak right at sunrise, standing high above the ash cone with Mount Kilimanjaro breaking through the morning clouds in the distance. After celebrating, you begin the descent. You will carefully retrace your steps to Saddle Hut, where you will stop for a hot brunch and a well-deserved rest. Instead of hiking all the way to the gate, you only have to hike a few more hours down to Miriakamba Hut, where you can take off your boots, have dinner, and get a full night of sleep.

Day 4

Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate

Elevation: 2,500 m/8,202 ft to 1,500 m/4,921 ft

Distance: 10 km/6.2 mi

Hiking Time: 2-3 hours

Habitat: Montane Forest

Meals: Breakfast

Description: After a relaxing breakfast and a final look at the peak you just conquered, you begin the final descent. Today is an easy, fast-paced hike down the shorter, steeper route through the forest. The trail passes through sections of jungle where black and white colobus monkeys jump through the canopy, eventually opening back up into the savannah. You will arrive at Momella Gate by late morning to collect your official summit certificate, tip your crew, and meet your driver for the transfer back to hotel for a hot shower.
